According to data recently released by Dubai Customs, Dubai's external food trade reached Dhs52 billion in 2020.
According to Nassim Al Mehairi, manager of Dubai Customs' statistics department, food imports totaled Dhs34.7 billion last year, exports totaled Dhs10 billion, and re-exports totaled Dhs7.3 billion.
The total volume of trade was 17 million tonnes, with 12.5 million tonnes of imports, 3.1 million tonnes of exports, and 1.3 million tonnes of re-exports.
“Food security is becoming more important in light of the current circumstances and the threats faced by the global pandemic,” Al Mehairi said, according to the Dubai Media Office.
The customs office reported a rise in the consumption of various foodstuffs during Ramadan.
Various customs centres at Dubai Customs expedited the clearance of food shipments to ensure that they were shipped to the market on time.
The Zadi (or my food) platform enabled Dubai Customs, DP World and the Dubai Municipality to work together to make food trade easier. Zadi is a unique food import network that aims to make the import and re-export of food shipments through Dubai ports as prompt as possible.
