They say everything stops for tea in England and The Victorian at Citywalk 2 does a good job of living up to that saying. While it does afternoon teas, scones and jams, in a ‘rose and crown’ set-up, it also specialises in fusion food.
Fusion Food in an English café? Yes, you read it right and I decided to dig into the most unexpected dishes to see how it fared.
I ordered ‘curdled egg’ and waffles to begin with. There was a blend of raspberry and peach tea to go with it. The curdled egg is a sort of shakshouka (an Arabic egg preparation) with tomato, capsicum and onion. Victorian’s version had milk and the egg was well done in a small cooking pot, making for a good breakfast option. The waffles, one of Victorian’s signature dishes, was perfect in every aspect.
I went a little adventurous on the main course, when I saw prawn curry with wild rice. How often do you come across a British café serving something like this?
The dish lived up to expectation and I found myself relishing every mouthful. By the way, the place serves wild rice – a species of marsh grass that grows naturally in shallow aquatic wetlands, lakes and slow moving streams around the paddy.
I also took digs at Crispy Skin Sea Bass – yet another exotic offering. The sea bass was done in lemon and dill sauce making it an extremely satisfying dish.
When I was ordering my dessert, I came across over 25 options to choose from. Unable to decide, I asked the staff to help me out. She did a fantastic job and served two of her favourites: Walnut PB Jar and Pistachio Raspberry Rhapsody. The former was my personal favourite as I am biased to peanut butter, but the latter turned to be a yummier dessert for the day. It’s basically pistachio crust filled with raspberry jello (a sticky, semi liquid form of raspberry sauce). To think of it, it’s quite a bold combination that touches the right notes.
Congratulation!
