Dubai now has a fish market with a state-of-the-art twist

It's been described as a fusion between traditional Emirati souq with a state-of-the-art twist, but one thing we do know about the new Deira Fish Market is that it is by far one of the best places in town to buy fresh fish, fruit, vegetables and meat.

The newly-positioned Waterfront Market, located near Hamriya Port, may have replaced the old market, which was a popular bustling spot for Dubai's food lovers and traders, but the new facility - which opened one week ago - is expected to serve as many as 500,000 visitors a month.

Offering a clean and neat environment, equipped with air conditioning, covered parking and heaps more space, the 100,000 square metres market is now packed out with fresh fish and eager vendors. The produce and meat traders will begin relocating to the new stalls by the end of Ramadan.

With variations of fish caught locally and further afield, the new location is being met with high praise from visitors as that pungent fishy smell, synonymous with the old market, no longer fills the nostrils of paying customer.

The modern facility also boasts an impressive, interactive floor, which mimics that of water splashing right beneath your feet - all without getting wet. And the hope is that the market will stick around for just as long as the old market, which was nearly 60-years-old.

While the old market will be fondly remembered by many, this new location - right near the waterfront - boasts a cleaner food environment and stricter hygiene regulations, to ensure the best experience for trader and customer.
