UAE Welcomes Badia Farms facility
Badia Farms produces crops without sunlight, soil, or pesticides, and utilizes 90% less water than open-field farming.
It will be home to Dubai-based Badia Farms’ 4,645m2 high-tech vertical farm facility, which is expected to begin operations in 2020, announced by TECOM Group member Dubai Industrial City.
The deal was inked by the managing director of Dubai Industrial City, Saud Abu Al-Shawareb, and the founder and chief executive officer of Badia Farms, Omar Al Jundi in the presence of the UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, HE Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, and the chief commercial officer of TECOM Group, Abdulla Belhoul.
The vertical farm will produce 3,500kg of high-quality fruits and vegetables on a daily basis, growing more than 30 varieties of fruits and vegetables sustainably, according to the state-run Dubai Media Office.
Considered the future of farming, vertical farming uses high-tech methods to produce crops in a controlled environment leveraging vertical space.
Based in Dubai, Badia Farms is the AgTech leader in the region, using hydroponic technology to grow fruits and vegetables all year round. It is able to produce crops without sunlight, soil, or pesticides, and utilizes 90% less water compared to open field farming.
Commenting on the facility, HE Dr. Al Zeyoudi said: “Badia Farms is a excellent example of how the UAE’s can flourish its agricultural industry while protecting our environment for future generations. This new high-tech vertical farm will contribute to the UAE’s commitment to becoming more sustainable.”
Al Zeyoudi added: “Hydroponic technology is a major contributor to agricultural sustainability and food diversity, as it improves crop production and lowers its cost. This is evident in the successful production achieved by Badia Farms in the very short time since its inception.”
